Current Summer Program! Registration is Open!
Careers of Future Champs
Career Exploration Summer Program
July 11th- 25th, 2020
Middle and High School Students

Objective:
To produce and present a writing piece about a job or career interest

Why It Matters:
Formal education is great, but self-education is essential and is often overlooked. This program gives young people a fresh look at what possibilities await them for meaningful work. Many adults report being unhappy with their careers, and this program will help establish the knowledge, skills, and confidence for young people to start or change their situation when they need to.

Before We Begin:
You will receive worksheets, reading material, and bonus resources via email, prior to the first session.

Send Me Beforehand:
-I will be emailing your parent/ guardian/ mentor a few questions before we launch.
-If you have recently taken any sort of skills inventory, interest survey, or career placement test, you can send me those results ahead of time.
-Decide on the time for your 15 Minute One on One Meeting with me (this will be July 15th or 16th).

What To Bring:
Print out the worksheets for our skills notes and have them ready when we meet online.
Have something to write with (pen or pencil)
Be ready to learn for yourself, and also learn in a group, which means responding to others, encouraging them, and deciding to see their projects as important, too.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are already interested in a specific career or job topic to learn more about, or if you have some background or experiences with it, that may be the best one to focus on for this program. We will be able to tap into that background you’ve built in a powerful way for this project. However, it’s not required to have a past with your topic. We can definitely start from scratch and still have a great project!

Parent/Guardian FAQ

-Will my child have one-on-one access to you?

Yes, I will hold one 15 minute individual session for each student during the program, and help facilitate an individual interview with a local professional in the student’s area of interest.

I am also willing to respond to each student occasionally via Facebook Messenger, as long as that’s okay with you. My answer may simply be that I will answer that student’s question during the next group session, but I will do my best to be responsive.

-What is expected of me?

The most important event for you will be the final session. This is when all the students will present their projects, and we will gather on the live video to be their audience. Other than that, you can be as hands off as you wish. If you do attend the planned sessions, I ask that you keep in mind that these sessions are for the students, and treat it like you’re in their teacher’s classroom. That way, I can keep the sessions effective and timely for all the kids. During off hours, engage with your kid as much as you want and be involved in their project as you see fit.  If your child tends to need some help staying on task with independent work and being ready for planned events, I encourage you to help out in that department so that your child can get the most out of this program.

-What if my child has special needs or concerns?

Please communicate those with me before the program starts. I will be sending you an email asking for information like that, and I will do my best to accommodate unique situations. While I do recognize and affirm kids’ challenges and specific ability levels, I have also found in my teaching career that we as adults get to set the tone for how much we focus on those things. I believe kids tend to step up to our challenges when we train them well and help them feel supported. I believe that kids gain incredible confidence and grit when they push through difficulties in performance and learning and prove to themselves that they are highly capable.

-What will the group size be?

No larger than 8 at this time.

-How do I register my child?

Send an email to hardingib@gmail.com with the subject line “Careers of Future Champs”

-How much is the program?

Early Bird pricing is $49 and lasts through Sunday, July 5th. Price will then go to $59, and registration will remain open until midnight on Thursday, July 9th.

Student FAQ

-How hard will this program be?

I think a better question is, what will you get out of the program? This program is fun and tends to get young people excited to move forward and try hard to make a good project to be proud of. If you struggle with being nervous around new people, with learning new things, or with being bored with learning projects, it’s okay. I want to learn how to serve you best, and I think you will impress yourself with how much you grow during this program.

-What makes this program different?

It’s difficult for classroom teachers to make time for material like this because they are under pressure to cover the curriculum of their subject areas. By focusing on soft skills and a career topic, you will learn a process for figuring out if a job or career is right for you at any point in your life- even the jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

See you soon!

Why Harding is Different

Truancy problems? Staff culture not optimal yet? Trouble balancing academic and social emotional services? Harding wants to share with you how to better connect with families, improve staff and student communication, and motivate students in a fresh, new way. Let's go!

Alternative schools are intense. Can we agree on that? Regardless of what you know or what you've heard about them, that's a basic statement we can work with.  Instructors face enormous challenges, and have no choice but to be shaped into the special forces of teaching! Alternative students don't act like you expect them to, and while you're feeling the pressure of hitting all the academic targets you've been tasked with, you quickly realize that these insanely talented, tough, sensitive, and promising youth have perhaps a greater need for teamwork skills, anger management, assertiveness, wellness, vision, and feelings of purpose. Therefore, in order to be effective there, THOSE are the EXACT qualities YOU must master and live out on a daily basis! And, who better to throw you into the fire and train you than the very students "the system" has underestimated, labeled, frustrated, and cast aside?

In this environment, a young Harding Ison-Bowman spent the first 10 years of his professional life learning and unlearning, relentlessly staying in the fire and seeking feedback until he figured out how to love and serve the students who challenged him, and lead on a high-functioning staff team.  Harding isn't special. He's just authentic, and has compressed a ton of intense training and mistakes into 10 unforgettable years. Through clear principles and stories, Harding can now help teachers and principals bring out the true greatness in themselves and the students they serve.

Get excited! Whether it's a staff or a student issue, Harding provides practical solutions he has used in the field, himself, and will help you implement them in a way that drives lasting change.

~If you're a mentor or educator, I can refresh you in your awesome work, and train you from real experience.

Need an engaging speaker to develop your students? Harding uses stories and principles designed to help students heal up from social and emotional damage, identify coping strategies and life skills they can take control of, and believe in their own ability to live a powerful life of meaning and contribution.

~If you're a young person, I can empower you with a stronger story of who you are and where you're headed.
